Note: This is the last of my three-part post about my recent Cebu trip. You can read the first part here and the second part here.

On our last day in the Queen City of the South, we learned what makes the city so alive and cheerful. We soaked in it's day life and made the most of the remaining hours of our short stay.

THE BURGER JOINT

me burg

There was this burger place that I had read from a magazine before. That late morning, I invited Edwin to have brunch there, just the two of us. He agreed after I promised to make the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño our next stop. Minutes later, we got to the burger place I wanted to try -- The Burger Joint. According to writer and traveler Troy Bernardo, who's also a Cebuano and whom I met at LCDTM a few weeks ago, it is one of Cebu's best kept secrets. I totally agree!

BASILICA MINORE DEL STO. NIÑO

basil

Sto. Niño (the child Jesus) is the patron saint of Cebu. It is housed inside the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño in Cebu City. Devotees from all over the province and nearby places regularly flock to the city to visit this church and see the Sto. Niño. In fact, people who go there had dramatically increased over the years that the church administration decided to build an annex to accomodate more people.

When Edwin and I dropped by the Basilica, we joined a long queue of people heading to the area where the Sto. Niño is kept.

After saying our prayers, we went to the candle station and lighted some candles.

From there, we headed to the famous Magellan's Cross which is just a few feet away from the Church. According to historians, this is the exact spot where Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese maritime explorer who rediscovered the Philippines in 1521, planted a Christian cross upon arriving in Cebu. The rest, as we all know, is history.

LARSIAN (FUENTE BRANCH)

lar ban

Larsian is the name of the grill house where Edwin and I had dinner on our last day in Cebu. We went to the Fuente Branch. It is a noisy, big place with lined food stalls and an open dining area. Edwin said on our way there that it is always full of diners. I confirmed later that he was not lying.

At Larsian, everything is grilled. With three branches in Cebu, it is famous to both locals and foreigners. Grilled specialties include fish, squid, pork barbecue, chicken barbecue, pork chops, isaw (chicken or pork intestines) and chicken heart and liver, among others. You won't believe it, but the prices of these food items start at P12 ($0.26). Chinese siomai is also available in most stalls.

larsian

You are to order food from the stalls surrounding the place. The vendors start calling out to the customers even before you find a table. They can go anywhere from being plain noisy to overly pushy. Don't say I didn't warn you.

You are to eat with your bare hands or use a supot (a clear cellophane bag) to cover them.

The grilled food are paired with puso (steamed rice wrapped in coconut leaves).

The good thing about Larsian is the cheap food prices. Eating here is never heavy on the pocket. When we dined there, we only paid P243 ($5.28). Take a look at our bill:

The only catch is the smoke that sticks to people's clothes even after you leave the place. But then, it's still worth a visit whenever you're in Cebu. The festive atmosphere and the smell of grilled food at Larsian are good attention-drawers. You can never go wrong with this one.

CHEZ ANDRE GOURMET PIZZA

After our Larsian dinner, we met up with friends at our favorite hang-out, Mr. Coffee. We chatted the night away over glasses of Frap.

I got hungry (I always do) and bought pizza from Chez André which was just beside the coffee shop we were in.

chez andre

Chez André is a fast-growing pizzeria franchise founded by a French businessman named Joel André Estoursy but is now owned and operated by Abrazo Corporation which is composed of local entrepeneurs.* Presently, Chez André has 13 branches in Cebu, Samar, Tacloban, Ormoc and Makati.

I ordered a box of Thin Crust Capone at P208 ($4.52). It had beef, mushrooms, onions and bell pepper. I loved it. The thin crust was crispy. The toppings were not generous but flavorful. I think I ate four slices out of eight. Lol.

Chivs and Ron were kind enough to send us to the airport when the clock struck two. (We didn't sleep that night.) We were so grateful to this wonderful couple.

All in all, my recent Cebu trip was fun and memorable.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank our friendly friends in Cebu: Taps, Chivs, Ron, and Merfe for the warm welcome and great company. Of course, special mention are the people (now friends) I have met there for the first time: Mr. Rodrigo Go, Charry, Marichu, Abbie, Rain and John Paul. Our short stay in Cebu would never have been complete without you, guys. Thanks from the bottom of my our hearts. :)
