Push Don’t Pollute: First Ever Manila Skating Event with a Cause
By edelweiz on 13th October, 2008

Last Saturday, Superfriend and I attended the first-ever skating event in Manila dubbed as “Push Don’t Pollute.” It was organized by Aloha Board Sports and participated in by around 200 long and skate boarders. More than just a gathering of skating fans in Manila, the event sought to promote the use of alternative transportation as a way to help preserve the environment.

The race was divided into three categories: men, women and grommet (young surfer). It started at around 7:00 a.m. We had a good view of the race from the shuttle we were in. I forgot to bring my P990i so I had no choice but to use my second phone. The photos I took were not as clear as I wanted them to be, so look at your own risk:

The awarding of winners was held at Rockwell grounds. Cool prizes were at stake so you can imagine how fun and exciting the event turned out.
In the men’s category, Gerard Cancio from Quezon City emerged as the winner. I found out he has been skating since he was in grade school. He received a brand new Sector 9 skate board, a check worth P10,000 and a gift bag from Aloha Board Sports. The same prizes went to the women’s and grommet categories. I was not able to get the names of the other two winners, though.

All in all, the event was a success. Hopefully, this becomes a yearly thing. The overwhelming response of the people to this event is proof that more and more Filipinos are getting into bolder sports like long and skate boarding. I may never be a skate boarder (I’m afraid to fall and get bodily injuries) but I am sure to support events like this, especially if the organizers would do them with worthy causes in mind.
P.S. Thank you to Ms. Charlene Sapina of Geiser Maclang for the invite and to Aloha Board Sports for the loot bag.
