My Newest Sport: Badminton

I didn’t intend to join at all. It was one of those spur-of-the-moment decisions I’ve made in this hyperactive life I lead. I am talking about the tricky sport of badminton. I recently signed up as one of the players under the Blue Team (for the OP Sportsfest 2009) with very little knowledge about the sport. So, what really is badminton?

According to Wikipedia,

Badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court that is divided by a net. Players score points by striking a shuttlecock with their racquet so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents’ half of the court. A rally ends once the shuttlecock has struck the ground, and the shuttlecock may only be struck once by each side before it passes over the net.

The mechanics of badminton are simple, but it’s very tricky when played. You must stay focus and constantly improve your footwork, strokes and grip. These are the three essentials that one should master when playing badminton.

Two weeks to go and it’s Tournament Day. It was only last night that I learned how to do backhand shots properly. Imagine that. I guess I better get moving now.

Oh and, I’ll appreciate it very much if you’ll wish me luck. :)
