The Many Health Benefits of Chocolates

My sweet tooth came from my mom. She started nibbling on candies and chocolates as soon as her first tooth came out. It’s quite amusing, but it’s true. She said her mother was the greatest, granting her every craving for sweets. I’d like to think her sweet tooth is the reason why she grew up caring and bubbly and of course, sweet.

I have always loved eating chocolates. The fact that it’s good to my health adds to my appreciation of it. Chocolates, particularly the dark ones, have many health benefits because of the great amount of nutrients present in them. For one, they are rich in flavonoids that act as antioxidants protecting the body against free radicals that cause aging and diseases.

Chocolates are good for the heart. Examples of good fats found in chocolates are oleic acid and stearic acid. Oleic acid is a healthy monounsaturated fat that’s also found in olive oil. Stearic acid, on the other hand, may be a saturated fat but it has a neutral effect on our cholesterol levels. The flavonoids in chocolates also have a role in improving the condition of our hearts as they help improve blood circulation and lower bad cholesterol. Given that, the inclusion of chocolates in our diet is really vital to our well-being.

Personally speaking, chocolates do wonders to my mood. I believe a lot of people can relate to that. Whenever I’m down or I just feel lethargic, I just get myself a chocolate candy and soon my senses go back to active mode. Chocolates have this positive effect on me. That is why whenever my money is more than enough, I stock up on chocolates. I usually shop for chocolates at the supermarket nearest to my place or when I have time, at my favorite deli that’s a jeepney ride away. Health benefits aside, I never know when I’ll need a mood booster so it’s better to keep my chocolates handy at all times.
