Over the years, social media has revolutionized the way people communicate, interact and do business. Thanks to technology, we are now more active and abreast of what’s happening in the world. Today, most of us have access to the internet making it easier to share knowledge and information or merely update each other of what’s going on with our lives.
When typhoon Ondoy (international name Ketsana) hit the Philippines and destroyed lives and properties in the process, it was social media that spread the sad news and mobilize people and organizations to provide assistance to the victims. Filipino internet users relied on Facebook and Twitter, among other social networking sites, in pushing for relief efforts and asking for donations from overseas. This made the news and showed to the world how effective social media can be in rallying people to work together for an urgent cause.
Social media brings information directly to where they should be---people. That makes it very useful not only in times of calamities but also in shaping public opinion. No wonder more and more businesses are into social media marketing today. Be it in establishing a brand or promoting a business, social media marketing gives companies the edge as it has a wider scope and operates at a lesser cost.
